My Story
A little bit more about me…
Hi, I’m Mattie. I am the baker and hand behind Salty Palm. I started Salty Palm because I wanted every family to be able to create safe and delicious treats. At the age of 7, I got tested for food allergies and found out I had quite a few. From that moment forward, my mom made it her mission to always have something I could eat when everyone else was eating something fun. I will be forever thankful that she sacrificed so much to make sure I never felt left out. I always loved being in the kitchen with my mom and grandma, learning and experimenting alongside them. When I was young, because I loved being in the kitchen, I was the designated mixer, and sometimes I was even allowed to pour the ingredients into the bowl. The kitchen is and has always been a place I could go to escape the busyness of life, to calm my mind, and to be in the quiet. I love experimenting with new things and making people smile with what I make. My food allergies were such a blessing in disguise because while they made life more frustrating at times, they also forced me to come up with new ways to create my favorite recipes and to become more adaptable in the kitchen and in life.
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to go to culinary school and open my own cafe. I thought that was going to be the plan for my life, and it would never change. However, after my junior and senior years of high school, I fell out of love with being in the kitchen, which led me to enroll in a traditional college to study Entrepreneurship. While I was there, I learned so much about myself and grew as a person, which leaves me grateful for the experience. However, I quickly realized the college lifestyle was not for me. I missed being in the kitchen and having that creative outlet with my support system around me. While I was away at college, I started looking at culinary schools. I soon found one that I loved, and they even offered a program of exactly what I wanted to do. When I applied and got in, I knew it was time to come home. Now I am a student at Escoffier Culinary School, and I am learning so much every day! I always knew I wanted to start my own business; I just didn’t know exactly what that would look like until now. Being able to do something I am passionate about every day gave me the creative outlet I needed to start thinking of different business ideas. That is when Salty Palm Bakery was born. At my core, I believe in the healing power of homemade food, and the importance of what you put in your body truly matters. This is a small stepping stone into the big dreams I have for this business one day. I want everyone to be able to enjoy the sweetness of life without worrying about bad ingredients or allergens in their food.
God uses everyone’s story in amazing ways, and little did I know what he had in store for me. He turned what I viewed as a bad thing into something that is now one of my biggest passions. Life is a journey, and sometimes you take the long route, but learning along the way makes it all worthwhile.
